Working @ a job you may not like….

The majority of the labor force may have at one time or another or still is, worked or be working at a job, or a company they may not find, using the term, enjoyable. Reasons for doing so varies from person to person. Three things make a workplace unbearable. The pay, the least amount of hours you are required to work and your boss. Some people will settle for less pay if working more hours will help compensate lost pay from a previous employment in an economy where finding a job is more difficult than a three dollar bill. Settling for a job with less pay, less hour and an unknowledgeable boss, you are in for a ride, so here are some tips that may or may not make the unpleasant workplace pleasant.

First and foremost, do not complain. Even to voice your displeasure with an event that happened that you and everyone else agrees is for a better lack of a term, lamebrain. Even though your fellow coworkers may agree and voice their opinions to you, you will be singled out and labeled a troublemaker from your superiors and eventually, you will be the scapegoat for everything that goes wrong, even if you are not involved.

Use the hours you are not getting searching for another job, or get a higher education. Do not worry if your employers tell you to give them two weeks notice. That is just a courtesy if you are not a contract employee. Most states are “at-will” employment states and it should have been explained to you when you are hired. Basically it means that an employee and/employer can terminate an employment for no reason other than discrimination at any time. That goes both ways, you can just leave whenever you want without notice.

When you are working, do not do more than you are tasked to do. In most companies, if an employee takes on extra responsibilities without being told to, the employer will look on that behavior as insubordinate. Ironic, because you would think if you took on the extra responsibilities, you will get noticed and may receive a promotion. Not many employers will want to pay their employees their worth, especially in an area where there is no wage labor competition.

Do not show that you have more knowledge than your superiors. You will be perceived as a threat and it will add to the “troublemaker” label. At a company that is difficult to work for, the people in the higher position may think you are insulting their intelligence if you try to show you have more knowledge than they do. Most companies like to perceive an image to the public and even though you may have been a business major and helped put multimillion companies on the map in the past, if you are not “pleasing” to the eye, you will not be in a position to interact with the public. Walk into a factory and look at the employees who do the work and then look at the bosses. You will get the idea.

These are the main tips that may help make your time at an unbearable workplace easier. Mostly, you just need to swallow your pride and allow your ego to take a beating and put your nose to the grindstone. Jobs are coming and going everyday. Just keep looking till you find something you can deal with.
