Times are rough. If you have a job now and no matter how belittle you may feel about it, you will need t keep it. If you do not have a job, good luck in your endeavor. Finding a job may appear difficult, but in reality, it is very easy. Think of job hunting as that picking up a person at your favorite hangout. If the picking are slim, you may have to lower your standards a bit.
The main focus after securing an interview, but really should be way before any job hunting, is your appearance. I am not only focusing on how your clothes look, but also your physical appearance. There is a reason why there are eye candy in the offices and in areas that deal with the public and leftovers are the ones doing all the “dirty” work. Yes there are laws against this, but face it, it is everywhere. So if you look like you been living on a sofa, you may want to rethink your lifestyle.
Your resume is your new passport. What is on it is just as important as what is not on it. Where you apply should be reflected in your resume. Sometimes, you may have to “dumb” it down. If you have no education after high school, then list as much volunteer work as possible. On the flip side, if you have a Ph.d and you are applying for a job that only requires a high school diploma, you may want to leave out the “extra” education.
Picking out a job to apply for may appear tricky, but it is not. You do not want to just apply for anything, but close to something you feel comfortable doing. If you were into some type of management position, do not be afraid to work on the “lower” level. You will “starting” over again and it will be frustrating, but sometimes we lose perspective from “where we came from” and need to get back to basics, so to speak.
In the past, employers preferred experience over education. Reason why is it was cheaper than wasting time training a newbie. Now, the employers up the ante and prefer education over experience. One, is they do not have to pay as much (sounds ironic), and two, if you have a higher education, it shows you are willing to put out a little extra effort, to make yourself better.
If you were in charge of a multimillion dollar outfit that was bought out and you lost your position in the process, applying for a lower level job may seem beneath you and if it is your only choice, you may want to leave the specifics. If you are a good fit for the job you are applying, you may not get hired because you may be over qualified and the employer just does not want to dish out that kind of salary.
It is a catch-22 in the world of job hunting. You have to learn to swallow your pride and take want you can get, but still take the time afterward to continue looking to find a better suitor.
