iMac + Big Sur = Almost uhoh

Like most Apple enthusiasts, I downloaded and installed Big Sur as soon as I could, which was late, after work.

The first problem I encountered was the downloading. That set me back because I knew the servers would have been a little overloaded.

Yesterday was my first real problem. I already had Big Sur installed and while I was doing some work, a transformer blew nearby and we lost power.

The wife and I took the opportunity to go for a short drive and have a small lunch, since there was nothing to do when the power is out.

We returned and the power was back on.....

Great, get back in the iMac and finish up a few things....

Booted it up..... and stuck on the Apple logo for 20 minutes.

Ok, no problem, just restart, right? No.

Stuck on the Apple logo, again.....

No panic yet. Search the problem on the internet. Clear the PVK RAM or whatever it is. Seemed to help a lot of others.

Nope.... worry sets in...... start to cry......

Hook an external drive to see if it boots into that. Yes. Good. The iMac is good. Use the external disk to check out the main disk. Everything seems fine.

Reboot.......

And still stuck on Apple logo.... tears are forming..... “why?” I cry.

Ok.... read a little more ......

Was not looking good, full reinstall was an option left.... oh no... I will lose everything......

Ok, reboot, use the disk utility. Disk checked out good. Great. Ok reinstall Big Sur. Ok, does not give me options to wipe clean or keep. Fingers crossed.

Hour later, iMac boots up. Everything there.

Now I know what to do if it happens again.

Clear the memory. See if an external drive will boot. Use the disk utility to check disk and if all checks well and was able to boot to an external disk, the reinstall the OS.
